History (German) |
Der Mecca Temple wurde 1923 vom Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine - besser bekannt unter dem Namen Shriners - gebaut. Ein neuer Versammlungsraum musste her. New York City Center of Music and Drama", welches 1943 eröffnete.
History (English) |
The Mecca Temple was built by the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine - more commonly known as Shriners - in 1923. The Shriners had previously held their meetings at Carnegie Hall, but as the Halls' management was disturbed by the amount of cigar smoke generated during Shriners meetings the group had to move to an own hall. After the bonds issue it was constructed at the prior Famous Players-Lasky Corporation movie studio site. After the financial crash of 1929 the Shriners were unable to pay the taxes on the building and it became city property. It was then was slated for demolition, but was then converted to the "New York City Centre of Music and Drama", which opened in 1943. Starting in 2010 the Moorish Revival theatre is actually being renovated in a $75 million project.
